Prof Peter Byass, Umea University, SWEDEN

The causes of half the world's deaths pass unrecorded by routine registration systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Verbal autopsy (VA) collects information from witnesses of a death to assign medical causes. This talk presents developments in VA methods.  Prof. Peter Byass was Professor of Global Health at University of UmeÃ¥, Sweden, Honorary Professor at the Universities of Aberdeen, Scotland and the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Peter worked on population health measurement in Africa and Asia, contributing to global evidence and methodologies. Peter sadly died, suddenly, in August 2020.
